A Florida mayor responded to Donald Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims entering the country by issuing a tongue-and-cheek ban of his own — on the Republican presidential front-runner himself.

“I am hereby barring Donald Trump from entering St. Petersburg until we fully understand the dangerous threat posed by all Trumps,” St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman tweeted Monday.

Kriseman, a Democrat, told the Tampa Bay Times that he was kidding around with the tweet, which spread quickly on social media. By Tuesday morning, it had been retweeted more than 7,000 times, and liked more than 9,000 times.

“You make a ridiculous statement, so you answer with a ridiculous statement,” Kriseman told the newspaper. “There are some people who thought I was seriously going to ban Donald Trump from St. Petersburg, and that’s obviously not something I would try to do. But his statement was kind of ridiculous, so I thought that it deserved an equal response.”

The Times reported:

Kriseman said he didn’t expect his tweet to take off like it had, but that he welcomed the spotlight on St. Petersburg.

“I very quickly had to take my phone out of my pocket because it wouldn’t stop vibrating,” he said.

Trump on Monday called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.” The proposal was denounced by other candidates, and legal experts have called it “ridiculous” and “impossible.”
